Munsiyari sits at 2,200 metres in the Johar Valley facing the Panchachuli massif — five snow peaks that turn gold at sunset. It is one of the most dramatic and least touristy destinations in Uttarakhand.
Munsiyari ("place of snow") is a small hill town on the border of Uttarakhand and Tibet. The view from here of the Panchachuli — five glacier peaks ranging from 6,334m to 6,904m — is considered one of the finest Himalayan panoramas in India accessible by road.
Getting There
Bareilly to Munsiyari: 340 km, approximately 9–10 hours by cab. The route goes through Kathgodam, Almora, Bageshwar, and Birthi (with a beautiful waterfall). This is a long mountain drive — book a cab with an experienced Kumaon driver. An Innova or SUV is essential.
Top Things to Do
Khaliya Top (3,500m): A 5 km trek from Munsiyari through bugyals (alpine meadows). Panchachuli at sunrise from here is a once-in-a-lifetime view.
Birthi Falls: A 126-metre waterfall on the road to Munsiyari, 35 km before arriving. Stop here — it is one of the finest roadside falls in Uttarakhand.
Tribal Heritage Museum: Small but fascinating — documents the Shaukas tribe who historically traded with Tibet across the Johar Valley.
Best Time to Visit
April–June (clear skies, snow on peaks) and September–November (post-monsoon clarity, zero crowds). Road is often snow-blocked December–March.
