Most visitors rush to the Taj Mahal and leave. But Agra has much more — a magnificent fort, the ruins of a Mughal ghost city, a serene riverside garden. Here is how to see all of it in one day.
Agra is one of India's most visited cities, but most tourists only see the Taj Mahal before rushing back to Delhi. If you stay just a few hours more, you discover one of the richest concentrations of Mughal heritage in the world.
The Taj Mahal: Getting It Right
Book tickets online the night before (tickets.asi.gov.in). Enter through the East or West Gate — never the main South Gate, which has the longest queues. Arrive at sunrise (6 AM) for the golden light and smallest crowds. The Taj in early morning mist is worth every effort.
Agra Fort
2 km from the Taj. The red sandstone fort where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb — and from the Musamman Burj tower, he could see the Taj Mahal across the river until his death. More intimate than Delhi's Red Fort, equally impressive.
Fatehpur Sikri
37 km from Agra. Akbar's abandoned capital — deserted after just 14 years, possibly due to water shortage. The Buland Darwaza (54m gate), Jama Masjid, and Panch Mahal are extraordinary. Allow 2–3 hours.
Mehtab Bagh
Just across the river from the Taj. A Mughal garden with a rectangular pool that once reflected the Taj perfectly. Best place for the sunset view of the Taj — and dramatically less crowded.
