The Valley of Flowers National Park in Chamoli district is one of the most beautiful places in India — a high-altitude glacial valley that transforms into an explosion of colour every monsoon. At 3,658 metres, it is accessible July through October.
Getting There by Cab
Delhi to Govindghat (trailhead): 490 km, 12 hours. Bareilly to Govindghat: 440 km, 10 hours. Rishikesh to Govindghat: 275 km, 8 hours. The road passes through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Joshimath — each confluence town more beautiful than the last.
The Trek
From Govindghat, a 4 km trek (or pony ride) leads to Ghangaria base camp. From Ghangaria, the Valley of Flowers is a 3 km trek. Total round trip: 14 km per day from base. Most visitors stay 2 nights at Ghangaria to properly explore both Valley of Flowers and nearby Hemkund Sahib.
Hemkund Sahib
5 km from Ghangaria, at 4,329 metres — the highest Sikh gurudwara in the world. A glacial lake surrounds it. The combination of Valley of Flowers + Hemkund Sahib makes this trip spiritually and visually unmatched.
Best Time
Mid-July to mid-August for peak bloom — 500+ species including Himalayan blue poppy, Brahma kamal, and cobra lily. October for clearer skies and fewer tourists. Closed November–May due to snow.
