Mathura and Vrindavan sit on the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh, just 11 km apart. Together they form Krishna's holy land — 5,000 temples, the eternal chanting of "Radhe Radhe," and some of the most colourful festivals in India.
Getting There
Bareilly to Mathura: approximately 200 km, 4 hours via Agra Expressway. Delhi to Mathura: 150 km, 2.5 hours.
Must-Visit Temples
Krishna Janmabhoomi (Mathura): The birthplace of Lord Krishna. The prison cell where he was born is open for darshan. Very crowded during Janmashtami.
Dwarkadhish Temple: Vibrant 19th-century temple in the heart of Mathura's old city. Stunning gate paintings.
Banke Bihari Temple (Vrindavan): The most beloved temple in Vrindavan. The unique darshan system — curtains opening and closing every few seconds — is unlike anywhere else.
ISKCON Temple (Vrindavan): Beautiful modern temple. Clean, organised, and excellent prasad.
Best Time to Visit
Janmashtami (August) is spectacular but extremely crowded. Holi in Braj (10 days of colour celebrations) is world-famous. Quiet weekdays in winter (November–February) offer a peaceful, intimate experience.
